Problem 1 (solar cell temperature determination for a solar module)

Determine the following for a solar module whose nominal cell temperature is 48 °C and that operates at an ambient temperature of Tu = 40 °C at open circuit:

(a) Cell temperature Tz with insolation at 1 kW/m2

(b) Cell temperature Tz with insolation at 200kW/m2

Solution: Use Equation 4.1, which yields the following results:

(a) TZ — 40 °C + (48 – 20 °C) ■ (1000/800 W/m2) = 75 °C

(b) TZ — 40 °C + (48 – 20 °C) ■ (200/800 W/m2) — 47 °C
