Input-Output Analysis

This method is predominantly suitable for very large scale installations, e. g., for power plants. The relevance of the results is limited by the ability to resolve single sectors of the input-output table. For example, it is usually not possible to compare two concrete products in common practice. In parts energy- and CO2-intensities for different products and services are already available in tabular form or will be made available soon due to the introduction of ISO 14000 ff (see Annex). For these components, in so far as they could be considered as a closed system, the expensive process analysis becomes obsolete (Spreng 1988).

The macroeconomic input-output analysis for the most important industrial sectors in Germany is given in Table 9.1.

The very raw definition of the material – and energy-flows of a product (e. g., electrical cable) is carried out according to the cost-participation of the incorporated industries (for the example of electrical cable: Electrical engineering, nonferrous metal production and chemical industry). More detailed values are given in the annex at Table A4.
